Set Goals with Clarity: Discovery Questions That Work
Do you take the time to write out your goals? As the year winds down, many of us start thinking about the changes we want to make for our health, career, family, and more. Honestly, I’ve never been a big fan of setting goals—but as a business owner, it’s a necessary step. Whether we call them goals or intentions, they are incredibly helpful for tracking progress, both personally and professionally. Looking back at old journal entries is always entertaining—it’s fascinating to see how much has shifted over the years.
Goal-setting can also be a powerful exercise for uncovering patterns or habits that may still hold us back. The experience can feel either uplifting or discouraging, depending on how extreme you get. I’ve always been taught to set small, realistic goals—so you avoid feeling overwhelmed or disappointed if things don’t go exactly as planned.
In my work as a coach, I use a set of discovery questions with clients to help identify the areas they truly need to focus on. These questions can be a great starting point for figuring out the goals that will make the most meaningful difference in your life next year.
Discovery Questions to Reflect On

If you could wave a magic wand and truly get what you want in the next 6–12 months, what would that look like?

When you reach this goal, what will having it do for you?
Think about how it will positively affect your life and why it matters to you. -
What’s currently stopping you or slowing you down from achieving this outcome?
Consider any roadblocks or habits that may be holding you back. -
How has this challenge impacted your daily life?
Reflect on areas such as work, relationships, or finances. -
How does it make you feel?
Does it leave you feeling better, worse, or somewhere in between? -
What is your stress level on a scale of 1–10, and how does it show up in your body?

How do you currently pamper yourself or unwind, and how often do you do it?

Is there anything you’d like to be doing for yourself that you currently aren’t?
🗂️ Setting Goals by Category
Sometimes, goal-setting feels overwhelming—but breaking it down into categories can make it easier to organize your thoughts. Pick one category at a time and start writing freely. You don’t need to have all the answers right away!
Categories to Consider:

Health & Fitness – Exercise, nutrition, sleep, stress management, or wellness routines.

Career – Professional growth, skill development, promotions, or new opportunities.

Relationships – Family, friends, romantic connections, or improving communication.

Social Life – Community involvement, hobbies, networking, or fun experiences.

Personal Development – Learning, habits, self-care, emotional growth, or mindset shifts.

Spiritual – Practices that nurture your inner self, mindfulness, meditation, or faith-based goals.

Financial – Budgeting, saving, investing, or reducing debt.
-
Giving – Acts of service, volunteering, or contributing to causes you care about.
✅ Commit to a Plan
Making meaningful changes starts with a clear commitment. Take a moment to reflect honestly on how ready you are to take action.
Reflect on these questions:

What would happen sooner or later if I don’t make these changes?

What might it cost me if nothing changes?
(Consider healthcare, time, money, and how it could impact your family.)
Don’t overwhelm yourself—focus on one category at a time.
Next steps:

Write down in your journal what you want to happen.

Add a short-term time frame, such as 3 months. You can adjust it shorter or longer depending on your goals.

Read your goals daily to reinforce your intention.

Visualize the outcome and begin taking small, consistent steps toward making changes.
