Deep Breathing & Chronic Pain: A Simple Tool That Can Calm Your Body and Mind
When you live with chronic pain, every day can feel like an uphill battle. Pain often causes us to tense our muscles, hold our breath, and remain in a constant state of stress. Over time, this creates a cycle where stress increases pain, and pain increases stress.
One of the simplest—and most powerful—tools you have available is something you do every moment of every day: your breath.
Deep, slow breathing isn’t a cure for chronic pain, but growing research suggests it can be an effective part of a comprehensive pain management plan. By intentionally slowing your breathing, you can help calm your nervous system, relax tight muscles, reduce stress hormones, and improve your body’s ability to cope with pain.
Why Does Breathing Matter?
When we’re stressed or in pain, our breathing often becomes shallow and rapid. This activates the body’s “fight-or-flight” response, increasing muscle tension, heart rate, and stress hormones.
Slow diaphragmatic breathing helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system, often called the “rest and digest” response. As your nervous system begins to settle, your muscles can relax, your mind becomes calmer, and your perception of pain may lessen.
Even taking just 5–10 minutes a day to practice mindful breathing can become an important part of your daily self-care routine.
The Five Aspects of Whole Health™ and Breathing
As a Certified Whole Health Educator™, I believe lasting wellness comes from caring for every aspect of your health—not just treating symptoms. Deep breathing supports each of these keys to wellness.
Physical Health
Breathing deeply allows more efficient oxygen exchange, encourages relaxation of tight muscles, improves body awareness, and may reduce pain-related tension. When paired with gentle stretching, massage therapy, or movement, breathing can help your body feel safer and more relaxed.
Emotional Health
Living with chronic pain often brings frustration, anxiety, grief, or overwhelm. Mindful breathing creates space between your emotions and your body’s stress response. It can help reduce anxious thoughts, improve emotional resilience, and promote a greater sense of calm.
Spiritual Health
Breathing invites us to become present. Whether your spiritual practice includes prayer, meditation, gratitude, or simply quiet reflection, conscious breathing creates an opportunity to reconnect with yourself and cultivate hope, peace, and acceptance.
Environmental Health
Our surroundings influence how we feel. Creating a peaceful environment for breathing practice—a comfortable chair, soft lighting, calming music, or a quiet corner of your home—helps signal your nervous system that it’s safe to relax.
Nutritional Health
Good nutrition supports healthy energy production and reduces inflammation. Hydration also plays an important role in muscle function and overall wellness. When combined with nourishing foods and mindful breathing, your body is better equipped to manage the physical effects of chronic pain.
A Simple Breathing Exercise
😮💨Try this exercise whenever you notice stress or pain increasing:
- Sit comfortably with your shoulders relaxed.
- Place one hand on your chest and one on your abdomen.
- Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of four.
- Feel your abdomen gently expand.
- Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of six.
- Repeat for 5–10 minutes while allowing your shoulders and jaw to soften.
Remember, there is no “perfect” breath. The goal is simply to breathe slowly, comfortably, and with awareness.
